What is Male Breast Reduction (Gynaecomastia Surgery)?

Gynecomastia or male breast/chest reductions affects 10-30% of male in UK. Excess fat develops around chest area which can cause embarrassment and affects confidence in teenagers and male adults.

Nu Cosmetic Clinic can refer you for three treatments to reduce excess fat for the chest area of a male, commonly called as “Moobs” which are traditional liposuction carried under general anaesthesia, while Vaser Liposuction and smartlipo are done under local anaesthesia. Each of these have their own advantages and dis-advantages. The most popular method of treating Gynecomastia is Vaser Liposuction, frequently combined with liposuction on abdomen and flanks area.

Gynaecomastia is a common plastic surgery procedures performed in males. Gynaecomastia (often referred to as ‘man boobs’) is the enlargement of male breast tissue. The growth of breast tissue can be painful or tender. In most cases, both breasts get enlarged; in others, only one breast gets affected. It can happen to males of any age or weight.

Surgery

Enlarged male breasts can be reduced by liposuction and/or by cutting out excess tissue. The surgery normally takes around two hours. Skin rarely needs to be removed. The scars are well hidden in the nipple and are not seen.

You can return to work within one week usually, if the work soes not involve strenuous activities. The patient will be advised to wear an elastic compression garment for 3-6 weeks to assist with the healing process. Yes, the results of a chest reduction are permanent; however, you can still gain weight after the procedure, which may alter the cosmetic results. We therefore advise that you keep fit and maintain a healthy weight following the procedure.

We recommend that people take a week or two off work following the procedure (more if your job is particularly physical). Strenuous activities, heavy lifting and intense exercise should be avoided for about 6 weeks after your surgery.

Diet and exercise can go someway to decreasing the size of your chest, however some people are predisposed to fat collection in the chest area, despite their best efforts to loose weight here. In this case, gynocomastia may be the solution.

Whenever skin is cut, nerves are also cut; this may result in altered sensation to the area, particularly at the incision site. All care will be taken to maintain sensation as much as possible.
