Breast enlargement was, by far, the most popular aesthetic surgery procedure in the UK in 2013, and it continues to steadily grow in popularity. Women of all ages are taking a big step towards reclaiming their sexuality and improving their confidence by having this procedure done, and there is no longer any real stigma attached to it.
With the current technology and technical expertise, it is possible for a woman to attain the body she has always dreamed off with a simple, fast and incredibly safe procedure.
However, a lot of women are either misinformed or know very little about breast surgery, which causes them to feel a bit anxious about the whole process. If you are seriously considering going through this procedure, it’s best to first develop a better understanding of what it involves. With that in mind, let’s take a more detailed look at breast enlargement surgery.
The most common reasons for breast surgery include reconstructive surgery following a mastectomy, where a breast with cancer is surgically removed, and cosmetic surgery aimed at increasing size, improving symmetry or changing the shape of the breasts. Women who have disproportionately small breasts for their body type, whose breasts have lost a significant amount of size after weight loss or lost firmness after pregnancy, are all excellent potential candidates for breast surgery.
There are two basic types of breast implant that are used in the UK:
– Silicone Gel: the more common option, silicone gel implants offer varying levels of firmness, come in a variety of different shapes, have a proven track record, are less prone to wrinkling, the material is pliable and feels more natural to the touch. The main disadvantage is that, if ruptured, the implants can leak silicone into the breast tissue, creating small lumps that will require surgical removal. With firm gel implants, known as cohesive implants, this is far less likely to happen, and they are less susceptible to wrinkling, but they do feel a little less natural and require a larger incision to be made.
– Saline: these implants have a strong silicone shell, and are filled with sterile salt water, either before or after being inserted into the breast. Saline implants also have a long and proven track record, they are safer, as the body simply absorbs saline in the unlikely case of a rupture occurring, they come in a variety of shapes. However, they are not as durable as silicone implants and can feel a little less natural to the touch.
It is important to note that not all implants will last for the rest of a woman’s life, and additional surgery might be needed down the line to replace old implants and/or remove scar tissue that develops around them. A safe estimate is that the average implants will last for 10-15 years before needing to be replaced, but in practice a lot of them tend to last a lot longer than this, and top grade models like the Allergan Natrelle, which is our implant of choice at NU Cosmetic Clinic, have a lifetime guarantee. With high-end implants such as these, there is very little risk of rupturing involved, and there is a considerable difference in overall feel and durability.
What does the procedure entail?
The first step is to consult the surgeon and find the right size, firmness and shape for you, depending on a number of factors like the initial size and shape of your breast, the type of skin you have and your overall body type. During the consultation you will be shown pictures and told what to expect. The procedure itself lasts around an hour and a half, and is performed under general anaesthesia. It involves a small incision, on the edge of the areola or the armpit, after which the implant is positioned. The whole process is quick and simple, and most of the patients are sent home the same day or the following morning. The patient then has to rest for a few days, and avoid overly strenuous activity for a few weeks after the surgery to ensure that she has healed properly. Any visible scars will fade during this time.
As you can see, breast enlargement has become a routine procedure that is done with the utmost effectiveness, and carries very little risks. The best way to go about it is to consult a reputable plastic surgeon who will know how to help you achieve the best results possible, e.g. an aesthetically pleasing proportional look that suits your body type.
