What is Nose Reshaping or Nose Job?

Many people are unhappy with their nose’s size or shape, perhaps it is large or crooked or maybe you feel it just does not fit in with the rest of your facial features. Nose correction surgery is also often referred to as nose job surgery or Rhinoplasty surgery and can drastically alter your appearance. It involves a surgical procedure to alter the appearance of the nose. During surgery the cartilage and bones within the nose are reshaped to give a different look.

Why Choose Rhinoplasty?

For numerous reasons, Rhinoplasty or nose correction is becoming a go-to surgical procedure. These include:

Cosmetic Reasons

  • Bridge & Dorsum Issues: Many people are often bothered by the hump and bump on the bridge of their nose. Therefore, to correct this issue, they opt for Rhinoplasty.
  • Tip of the Nose: Some individuals have too thin, round, wide or beaked nose tip, making them feel conscious. This is why they undergo the nose job to refine and reshape the nasal tip appearance and make it more aesthetically appealing.
  • Length- Another reason why people consider nose surgery is the length of their nose. Some people want to shorten the size of their noses, while others want to increase the length for better harmony and balance.

Medical Reasons

  • Injury Correction: Besides cosmetic reasons, Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that people opt for to correct nasal deformities that may result from sports injuries and accidents. The procedure helps reshape the nose and restore its function after trauma.
  • Improve Breathing Issues- Structural problems like nasal obstruction and deviated spetum result in breathing difficulties. Nose surgery alleviates breathing issues and improves airflow.
  • Quality of Life: Nasal injuries and deformities can lower the quality of your life. It can negatively impact mental health and cause pain and discomfort. This is why patients often seek nose surgery to overcome mental health issues and ensure quality living.

In some situations, patients opt for Rhinoplasty for medical and cosmetic reasons. So, it is best to consult an experienced surgeon referred by our team at NU Cosmetic Clinic to determine if you’re the ideal candidate for the procedure.

Surgery

Nose job surgery is performed in an operating theatre and in most cases under general anaesthetic. Surgery usually lasts between one and two hours depending on the amount of reshaping to be carried out. In order to avoid visible scarring to the face, the Surgeon will begin by making internal incisions to the nose and then carry out remodelling which may involve trimming or shaping cartilage and bone to create smooth shape.

Later Progress

Nose Surgery AfterAfter the surgery, the Surgeon will put in a nose plug and a plaster splint to keep the nose in place whilst it heals. The plug can be removed the following day, however, the plaster splint will need to remain for a week. Rhinoplasty surgery usually involves an overnight stay at your clinic or hospital and you should be able to go home the following day.

After you have your plaster splint taken off you will not see the new shape of your nose immediately as the nose will be quite swollen for around three months. After the swelling reduces, you will be able to see how your newly shaped nose looks.

You will be able to return to work after ten days but it is essential that you follow the aftercare instructions discussed with your Surgeon and attend all follow up appointments. You should also avoid sunbathing and contact sports for a few months after your nose correction surgery.

Recovery

The recovery period after Rhinoplasty revolves around quality aftercare and plenty of results. That’s the best way to heal and ensure the best results. Therefore, following the nose surgery, make sure to prioritize rest. Make sure to conform to personalized post-operative care instructions given by your surgeon.

Nonetheless, some basic guidelines that should be followed after a nose job are listed below:

  • Take one to two weeks off from work and rest, as you may experience issues like swelling. It’s important to understand that tissue swelling will settle down gradually. However, resting will optimize healing.
  • Make sure to take your medication. This helps manage discomfort during the recovery period.
  • Also, avoid driving right after the surgery. This is because of the potential effects of anaesthesia and the presence of dressings on the nose that can obstruct your vision.
  • Depending on the stitch type, it takes a week to remove them. This is essential for promoting healing and reducing infection risk.

Please note that it may take a month for bruising, redness and swelling on the nose to decrease.

  • Plus, you can resume light activities like swimming and exercise as you recover. Nonetheless, it is advisable to consult the surgeon before you engage in physical activities to ensure healing progresses. Usually, it takes two months before patients can resume strenuous exercises and activities.
  • Avoid activities that can prevent healing, like wetting your splint, sneezing too hard, bathing in hot water and blowing the nose. These actions can compromise the integrity of your surgical incisions.
  • Avoid exposure to smoky and dusty environments as they can irritate nasal passages while increasing the risk of infections.

Yes, the results of nose correction are permanent.

We recommend that people take a two weeks off work following the procedure (more if your job is particularly physical).
